Never Give Up by Sara Pevlor
Are you believing for something like healing, money or salvation of a loved one, and you have reached a point where you feel that it would be easier to "give up" than to keep believing by faith? If your answer is "Yes" youre not alone. But lets look at a passage of scripture where a woman is asking something of Jesus and no matter what, she is not going to give up!
A Canaanite woman from that vicinity came to him, crying out, "Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession." Jesus did not answer a word. So his disciples came to him and urged him, "Send her away, for she keeps crying out after us." He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel." The woman came and knelt before him. "Lord, help me!" she said. He replied, "It is not right to take the children's bread and toss it to their dogs." "Yes, Lord," she said, "but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters table." Then Jesus answered, "Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted." And her daughter was healed from that very hour.
Matthew 15:22-28 We see in verse 22 that this Canaanite woman
is asking Jesus to deliver her daughter of a demon., What was Jesus response? He
ignored her! Can you image going to a man that you knew had the ability and power to heal
your child and when you finally reached him, he ignored you, didnt even acknowledge
that you had spoken to him!
For many that would be the end. They would be
so upset and offended by the actions of the man, they would most likely forget why they
were there in the first place.
But not this Canaanite woman. Keep in mind that
she is a Gentile, shes not an Israelite, in covenant with Jehovah. But never the
less, she had the faith to believe that Jesus had the answer for her daughter. After being
ignored by Jesus, she kept calling out after the disciples. This woman was determined to
get to Jesus. When the disciples could stand it no longer, they asked Jesus to "send
her away." Jesus responds by telling her that he was sent to "the lost sheep of
Israel." When she finally received a word from the Lord, it wasnt the one she
wanted. She had come to Him believing He held the answer she needed, and she was given the
wrong answer!
So far, the Canaanite woman has been ignored
and given an answer that is exactly the opposite of her desire. But she stuck with it,
what would you do? And little did she know that it was going to get worse before it got
better!
The woman then received from Jesus the ultimate
insult, He called her a dog! Imagine having someone you admired, respected, believed in,
tell you to your face "It is not right to take the childrens bread and toss it
to their dogs." I can just imagine people at a meeting today and having something
similar said to them. You know theyd swell up like a toad and turn all red,
youd probably be able to see the steam coming out of their ears! But this woman had
a faith that was determined and focused, she was not about to leave Jesus without her
miracle. So instead of getting angry, she agreed with Him! She said "Youre
right, I am a dog, but even the dogs eat the crumbs from the masters table."
She was a woman determined to receive her miracle. Even Jesus marveled at her faith.
There is never any indication that she even
considered giving up. She had a focus and a spirit that would NEVER GIVE UP! Even though
she was ignored, given the wrong answer (or a bad report), and
insulted, she hung in there because she knew of Jesus reputation. If she was going
to receive this miracle anywhere, it would be from Him.
What about you? Are you willing to hang on to
that promise from God? No matter what comes your way, no matter what the circumstances
say, no matter what other people say? You have to determine in your heart that, no matter
what, you are going to be victorious. Learn to ignore the circumstances and put your faith
in Jesus and then NEVER GIVE UP!
